Geminids meteor shower peaks this weekend: How to watch
CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WBOY) — People across the globe could see up to 120 meteors per hour during the peak of the Geminids meteor shower this week.
The Geminids is considered one of the best and most reliable annual meteor showers, happening in mid-December each year, according to NASA.
Unlike most meteor showers that have a limited viewing area and time, the Geminids peak will be visible from both hemispheres starting around 9-10 p.m. local time.
Although the Geminids started in mid-November and will continue until Christmas Eve, the peak is expected to be this Friday and Saturday. Although the full moon could wash out some of the meteors, viewers can still expect to see yellow lights streak across the sky in clear, dark conditions.
According to NASA, the Geminids will be visible as early as 9 p.m. and throughout the night, but it might take some patience to see it.
NASA recommends that viewers find a dark area away from city or street lights and lay flat on their backs with their feet facing south.
It can take up to 30 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the dark before you begin to see meteors.
