The Virginia police department looking into the death of former U.S. Attorney Jessica Aber say it was likely due to natural causes.
“While the investigation into the death of Ms. Jessica Aber is ongoing, at this time, detectives have found no evidence suggesting that her death was caused by anything other than natural causes,” the police department in Alexandria, Va., said in a statement Tuesday.
Aber, a former attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, was found dead at her home over the weekend at the age of 43. Police said they received a report of an unresponsive woman and rushed to the scene.
Aber had worked for the Eastern District of Viriginia since 2009 and was later nominated by former President Biden in 2021 to be a U.S. attorney. She received a unanimous confirmation from the Senate and stepped down from her role in January when President Trump took office.
Alexandria Police said the investigation is ongoing and the case will remain open until the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner returns a final ruling in Aber’s cause and manner of death.
“We urge the public to respect the privacy of Ms. Aber’s family during this time of loss,” police said, directing further updates and questions to the medical examiner.
A friend of Aber’s family told NBC News that police believe she died due to a long-standing medical issue.
