Doomsday clock ticks closer to catastrophe in dire global warning

The world moved yet closer to global catastrophe in 2024, with the hands of the Doomsday Clock ticking one second closer to midnight, the shortest time to zero hour in its 75-year history.

The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists announced Tuesday they are setting the clock to 89 seconds to midnight, signaling that threats of nuclear war, climate change, and other issues have worsened, as governments have failed to make meaningful change and taken steps to exacerbate these risks.

“The purpose of the Doomsday Clock is to start a global conversation about the very real existential threats that keep the world’s top scientists awake at night,” said Daniel Holz, a professor at the University of Chicago who chairs the Science and Security Board at the Bulletin.

“National leaders must commence discussions about these global risks before it’s too late. Reflecting on these life-and-death issues and starting a dialogue are the first steps to turning back the Clock and moving away from midnight," he added in a statement.
