Democrats investing $100K into Virginia special legislative elections
The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) announced Tuesday it is investing $100,000 in two Northern Virginia state Legislature special elections next month.
While Democrats are expected to win the races for the 32nd state Senate district and the 26th state House district, the elections could set the tone for what is expected to be a competitive election year in Virginia.
The governor’s mansion, lieutenant governor, attorney general and state House are all up for grabs.
“The stakes couldn’t be higher as we approach the first special elections of 2025. We must preserve our majorities to lead the upcoming legislative agenda and position Democrats for success heading into November’s elections,” the DLCC said in a statement. “We know the importance of early investments in laying the foundation for success, which is why we’re building the infrastructure now — not next year — for Democratic power in Virginia.”
State Del. Kannan Srinivasan (D) is running against Tumay Harding in the 32nd state Senate district, which was left vacant by Rep.-elect Suhas Subramanyam (D). Meanwhile in the 26th state House district, Democrat JJ Singh is running against Republican Ram Venkatachalam.
Both districts are located in Loudoun County, outside of Washington in Northern Virginia. While the region is considered a Democratic stronghold, Vice President Harris underperformed President Biden’s 2020 margins in the area last month.
