Death toll rises to 5 in Los Angeles; flames threaten Hollywood Hills
The death toll in the devastating California wildfires has risen to five, as the flames continue to engulf the Los Angeles area and threaten the Hollywood Hills.
Officials had previously confirmed just two fatalities from the fires.
More than 1,000 structures have been destroyed by the Pacific Palisades fire, west of Los Angeles. Entire neighborhoods have been leveled due to the flames that remain uncontained, The Associated Press reported.
Anywhere from 200 and 500 structures have been damaged or destroyed from the Eaton fire, north of Pasadena.
A new blaze, dubbed the Sunset fire, broke out near Runyon Canyon in the Hollywood Hills late Wednesday, according to officials — as several other brush fires remain active.
Mandatory evacuations are underway related to new fire. The order was in place for Laural Canyon Boulevard and other areas were alerted that they should be ready to leave their homes.
Lawmakers say they stand ready to assist with emergency aid and some say it may be California’s worst disaster in history.
President Biden signed off on a federal disaster declaration and emergency aid looks to be flowing to the area as officials say the hurricane-force winds may die down and allow first responders to attempt to contain the blazes.
