Conway: 'Of course' she can see Trump conceding defeat if he loses election
Kellyanne Conway, the former senior adviser to former President Trump, said “of course” she can imagine a world in which Trump graciously concedes defeat to Vice President Harris after losing the election.
At the end of a lengthy live interview at The Atlantic Festival 2024 on Thursday, journalist Tim Alberta posed one final question to Trump’s 2016 campaign manager, requesting just “a quick yes or no.”
“Can you conceive of a scenario in which Trump loses and graciously concedes defeat?” Alberta asked, prompting some laughter from the audience.
“Yes,” Conway replied.
“You can?” he asked.
“Yes, of course he can. Yes, absolutely, absolutely,” she said, before pivoting to push for another debate between the major party nominees.
Trump did not accept the results of the 2020 election, and sowed doubts about the result. A mob of his supporters on Jan. 6, 2021 overwhelmed police and stormed the Capitol, leading to the evacuation of House and Senate members. The incident delayed Congress's certification of the election results.
All of this has raised questions about how Trump would handle results that showed him losing in 2024.
Trump has not explicitly said he would accept the results. In May 2023, Trump told a CNN town hall that he woudl do so "if I think it’s an honest election, absolutely.”
“If I think it’s an honest election, I would be honored to,” he said.
In a survey earlier this year, 74 percent of Americans said they expected Trump to refuse to concede if he loses.
