China supports 'recent consensus' between US and Russia on Ukraine war, foreign minister says

China supports “the recent consensus” between the U.S. and Russia on the war in Ukraine, said Wang Yi, the country’s foreign minister, amid ongoing discussions about bringing an end to the nearly three-year-long war.
“China supports all efforts dedicated to peace, including the recent consensus reached by the United States and Russia, and hopes that the parties concerned can find a sustainable and lasting solution that takes into account each other's concerns,” Wang said in a statement translated into English.
“China is willing to continue to play a constructive role in the political settlement of the crisis in accordance with the requirements of the parties concerned and taking into account the concerns of the international community, especially the countries of the global South.”
Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart met in Saudi Arabia earlier this week, a notable change in U.S.-Russia relations that finished a policy of isolation imposed following the February 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia.
Officials from both the U.S. and Russia also recently exited meetings indicating an altered bilateral relationship, but there were no solid commitments in the direction of ending the war in Ukraine.
“It was positive, upbeat, constructive, everybody there to get to the right outcome, solution-based,” Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff said previously. “We couldn’t have imagined a better result after this session. It was very, very solid.”
In Wang’s statement, the foreign minister said that when it comes to the war in Ukraine, “the calls for peace talks have been growing recently and the window for peace is opening.”
“Although the positions of the parties are not consistent and there is no simple solution to complex problems, dialogue is always better than confrontation and peace talks are always better than war. China has always advocated that the crisis be resolved peacefully as soon as possible,” Wang added.
China has provided support for Russia throughout its war against Ukraine, including commercial support for Moscow’s military production. The relationship between the two countries frayed the U.S. and China's ties during the Biden administration.
