Brit Hume on Trump comeback: 'The Reagan Republican Party is gone'
Fox News chief political analyst Brit Hume said Monday that the Republican Party with former President Trump as “the prominent figure in the party” is no longer “the Reagan Republican Party.”
“I mean, the Republican Party we knew, the Reagan Republican Party, is gone,” Hume told “America’s Newsroom” anchors Dana Perino and Bill Hemmer, in a clip highlighted by Mediaite. “And even if Trump falters, fails … doesn’t win and ends his political career, the changes that have been wrought while he’s been the prominent figure in the party, I think are enduring.”
Under Trump’s leadership, many GOP critics of the former president have left the party and have faced attacks from Trump and his allies.
Former Rep. Liz Cheney (Wyo.), once a member of House GOP leadership, was essentially tossed from leadership and now often draws the ire of Trump due to her criticism of him following the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riots. Cheney, who endorsed Vice President Harris in this cycle, was also vice chair of the congressional committee that investigated the riots.
Hume said he thought Trump's political career was over after the Jan. 6, 2021, incident, but he was wrong.
“I remember so vividly, and I was a little embarrassed about this myself, because I remember after Jan. 6, I said, ‘This guy is done, he’s radioactive,’” Hume said.
There is only a day before Election Day, and polling shows the race between Trump and Harris to be very tight. Harris is only leading Trump by 0.1 points, according to an average of national polls from The Hill/Decision Desk HQ.
The Hill has reached out to the Trump campaign and the Republican National Committee for comment.
