Bill O'Reilly: Trump should be 'looking to reassure Americans' on economy
Former Fox News host Bill O'Reilly says President Trump should be concerned about getting his economic message across as Americans face the rocky impact of his tariff policies and continued inflation.
“I think he should be concerned with the fear factor, certainly, and he should be looking to reassure Americans," O’Reilly told NewsNation’s "On Balance" Monday night. "The problem that the White House has now is they’re just ramping up and the explanations sometimes are murky, and Donald Trump takes it all on himself."
He added that if he were in Trump's position, he would "throw somebody out there who’s a calm ... credible economist" to soothe fears about uncertainty.
“You have to calm everything down and then you have to explain,” the conservative pundit said.
Trump, during an interview with Fox News's Sunday Morning Futures, refused to rule out the possibility of a recession, prompting uncertainty on Wall Street and in the halls of the Capitol, as lawmakers work to negotiate a deal to avert a government shutdown at the end of the week.
O'Reilly said he doesn't believe that most Americans are "hurting economically" at the moment.
“Prices are too high, but they will come down,” he told host Leland Vittert. “Americans have to decide for themselves whether they want to live in a panic state … or will they say ‘Ok, we’re gonna give it a month or two and then we’ll panic.'”
A new Emerson College poll, released Tuesday, found 47 percent of voters approve of Trump’s job performance nearly two months into his second term and 45 percent disapprove. His approval has taken a small slide from when he took office in January, according to the poll's analysts.
Nearly half of respondents in the latest survey said they do not approve of the president's handling of the economy, while 37 percent said the opposite.
"The true challenge will be how voters perceive their financial future," Emerson College Polling director Spencer Kimball said in a statement. "While little has shifted since the election, the initial ‘honeymoon phase’ seems to be coming to an end.”
