Former President Bill Clinton weighed in on President Biden’s debate performance, noting "facts and history matter."
“I’ll leave the debate rating to the pundits, but here’s what I know: facts and history matter. Joe Biden has given us 3 years of solid leadership, steadying us after the pandemic, creating a record number of new jobs, making real progress solving the climate crisis, and launching a successful effort in reducing inflation, all while pulling us out of the quagmire Donald Trump left us in,” Clinton posted on social media platform X. “That’s what’s really at stake in November.”
Biden’s shaky debate performance sparked fear and panic among Democrats.
Some even called for him to step aside and allow someone else to run against former President Trump. The White House and Biden’s campaign have slammed the requests, signaling the incumbent is in it for the long haul.
The president held a campaign stop in North Carolina Friday, where he sought to tame the panic. While in Raleigh, he said he is a politician who knows how to "get back up" after he’s been "knocked down."
Clinton is the latest prominent Democrat to defend Biden on the heels of the Thursday debate.
Vice President Kamala Harris defended Biden’s performance during a CNN interview immediately following the debate. She admitted the president had a “slow start,” but “it was a strong finish.”
Former President Obama defended his former vice president. He urged voters to pick Biden this fall despite the rough debate performance.
“Bad debate nights happen. Trust me, I know,” Obama posted on X. “But this election is still a choice between someone who has fought for ordinary folks his entire life and someone who only cares about himself.”
Clinton’s wife, former Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, also backed Biden after the debate. She said the choice in the debate “remains very simple” and she will be voting for Biden in the fall.
