Beshear: Trump addressing ‘everything but inflation and prices’
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D) said President Trump is addressing everything “but inflation and prices” in his first week in office.
Beshear joined CNN on Tuesday, where he weighed in on Trump's mass deportation plan and arrests of migrants taking place in various communities across the country.
“What I’ve seen out of his executive orders are him addressing everything but inflation and prices,” Beshear said. “We see more executive orders on culture war issues than we do on the economy.”
During his first few days in office, Trump issued a flurry of executive orders, including officially recognizing only two genders, revoking diversity, equity and inclusion programs and banning transgender people from serving in the military.
Throughout his campaign, Trump focused on several key issues, like reducing the cost of living and inflation, international tariffs and his deportation plan.
Beshear argued he wants the administration to “do the math” about how the deportation plan could impact key sectors. Economists say food production impacts, coupled with tariffs, could increase the price of goods for Americans.
“Doing that math is going to be important if Donald Trump is going to fulfil his campaign promise to lower prices,” he said.
Beshear added that Trump will need Congress in order to follow through on his economic promise to the country.
“As he’s doing this immigration approach, I think it’s really important that he brings Congress together to ultimately get the math right, and that could help us to ultimately decrease prices at the grocery store,” he said.
The Hill has reached out to the Trump administration for comment.
