Aubrey Plaza calls out Tony Hinchcliffe's Puerto Rico joke from Trump rally
Actress Aubrey Plaza on Tuesday took aim at comedian Tony Hinchcliffe for calling Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage” during a New York City rally for former President Trump on Sunday.
“I just wanted to very quickly respond to the racist joke that was made at that Trump rally about Puerto Rico, where most of my family is from,” Plaza said, as she presented an award at the Wall Street Journal Magazine Innovator Awards event Tuesday night.
"Thankfully, my sweet abuelita wasn't here to hear that disgusting remark,” Plaza continued. “But if she was alive today, I think she would say, 'Tony Hinchcliffe, go f--- yourself.'"
“And yes, The Wall Street Journal can quote me on that,” she continued, in remarks reported by Variety.
Plaza is one of the latest high-profile celebrities to publicly criticize Hinchcliffe, who goes by Kill Tony, for his controversial joke, which he made on stage Sunday at Madison Square Garden ahead of Trump’s speech.
Hinchcliffe’s set also included jokes targeting Jews and Black men, but it was his comments about Puerto Rico that generated the most attention and backlash.
“There’s a lot going on. Like, I don’t know if you know this, but there’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. I think it’s called Puerto Rico,” Hinchcliffe said on stage Sunday, eliciting mixed reactions from the crowd.
At another point, he said Latinos “love making babies.”
“They do. There’s no pulling out. They don’t do that. They come inside. Just like they did to our country,” he said.
Democrats have swiftly condemned the jokes, as have some Republicans — including officials from the Trump campaign. Hinchcliffe also defended his comments, saying critics have "no sense of humor."
“This joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign,” Trump campaign senior adviser Danielle Alvarez said in a statement.
