As FBI probe continues, 'drones are not going away': Wharton
(NewsNation) — The FBI has said that it has no answers about the drones that have been spotted in the skies over New Jersey and New York in recent weeks, frustrating local lawmakers.
But Retired Maj. John F. Wharton, who consults with several government agencies, says drones aren’t going anywhere. Although the U.S. military says that the drones are not its property, testing and valuation could be operated by the defense contractors in the private sector on behalf of the military, Wharton told NewsNation.
“We’re going to see (drones) in many different ways,” Wharton said.
Wharton said that the inter-agency coordination as a federal probe continues is a good thing. If nothing else, the effort is a very good test of how a synchronized counter-drone system or an Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) system could be used by the government.
However, with drones flying over military bases in some cases, Wharton says some issues need to be addressed considering where the drones are being spotted.
“I don’t think you need to engage kinetically and take these things down until you get a little more information from the government and all the other agencies,” Wharton said.
“However, I do think it is a concern that when you’re flying over critical infrastructure, dense urban environments that are important to national security, we have to be prepared and have to put the proper measures in place. It’s not going away.”
