Apple releases ChatGPT integration with Siri
Apple began integrating OpenAI's ChatGPT onto its devices in a long-awaited software rollout on Wednesday.
ChatGPT — OpenAI's popular generative artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot — will be available for Apple's Siri voice assistant and the new Writing Tools feature found on iPhones, iPads and Mac computers, the tech giant announced Wednesday.
When a user with the iOS 18.2 update asks Siri a complex question, the voice assistant may suggest a user allow access ChatGPT so Siri can provide a response directly, according to Apple. By doing this, users will not need to jump between applications.
Users will also be able to ask ChatGPT for assistance with written content when on apps compatible with Apple's new Writing Tools feature. They can also use ChatGPT's image-generation to make pictures alongside written content.
The integration of ChatGPT, first announced earlier this year, marks Apple's latest efforts to keep up in the AI race against other leading tech companies. The California-based company began rolling out its new AI software, Apple Intelligence, earlier this fall.
Apple emphasized users do not need to make an OpenAI account to use the ChatGPT features. It also maintained OpenAI will not store data from users' requests and will not use any information for model training.
OpenAI has faced scrutiny, including various lawsuits from news outlets alleging it violated copyright laws to train its models. The AI developer has pushed back on these accusations, maintaining training is fair use and outlets are provided an "opt-out."
