46 percent of voters see no clear winner in Trump-Zelensky meeting: Poll
Forty-six percent of surveyed American voters said that neither the U.S. nor Ukraine walked away as a winner from last week’s tumultuous meeting between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, according to a new Emerson College poll released Monday.
Another 35 percent of surveyed voters said the U.S. walked away as a winner, while 15 percent said the same about Ukraine. Four percent said both counties were “equally successful.”
The poll also showed a stark, partisan divide in how Americans view the meeting, with 57 percent of Democrats saying neither country walked away as a winner. Another 25 percent of Democrats said Ukraine was the winner, while 16 percent said the same about the U.S. Among Republicans, 60 percent said the U.S. walked away as the winner, while 31 percent neither. Seven percent of Republicans said Ukraine was the winner.
Fifty-one percent of surveyed independents said neither country walked away as a winner, while 28 percent said the U.S. did. Fifteen percent said Ukraine was the winner.
On Friday, an Oval Office meeting between Trump, Zelensky and Vice President Vance sent shock waves through the world when the leaders engaged in a shouting match over Ukraine’s war with Russia, resulting in Vance and Trump calling Zelensky “disrespectful.”
Zelensky said Monday in a post on the social platform X that “we need real peace” and insisted on security guarantees, saying he is still working with American and European partners.
“It is very important that we try to make our diplomacy really substantive to end this war the soonest possible,” he said on the platform.
Trump hit back in his own post on Truth Social, calling Zelensky’s remark “the worst statement that could have been made by Zelenskyy, and America will not put up with it for much longer!”
“It is what I was saying, this guy doesn’t want there to be Peace as long as he has America’s backing and, Europe, in the meeting they had with Zelenskyy, stated flatly that they cannot do the job without the U.S. – Probably not a great statement to have been made in terms of a show of strength against Russia. What are they thinking?” Trump said.
The back-and-forth is the latest development in a massive shift in U.S. foreign policy toward Ukraine and Russia.
The same Emerson College poll showed Americans divided over Trump’s approach to the conflict, with 73 percent of Republicans approving and 76 percent of Democrats disapproving. Forty-six percent of independents said they approved and 35 percent said they disapproved.
The Emerson College poll was conducted March 2-3 among 1,000 registered voters. The margin of error is 3 percentage points.
